Properties of Plastics

  • They are light in weight and are chemically stable.
  • Plastics can be moulded into different shapes and sizes.
  • Durable insulation with low thermal conductivity.
  • Good impact resistance and does not rust.
  • Good transparency and wear resistance.
  • Poor dimensional stability and can be easily deformed.
  • Low processing cost.

Different Types of Plastic

Plastics are of Two Types:

  1. Thermoplastics
  2. Thermosetting Plastic

Thermoplastics: 'Thermoplastic' refers to plastics that do not undergo any chemical changes when exposed to high temperatures. When subjected to heat, these plastics do not undergo any changes in their chemical structures/compositions and cannot be remoulded once cooled.

Thermosetting Plastics: Thermosets are plastics that can be moulded only once and do not change shape on applying heat. These plastics can only be moulded once. These plastics also undergo degradation and can become damaged when exposed to significant heat.
