One of the more expansive sub-categories of portable cord and power cable, the topic of service cord can be quite daunting at first, however it becomes quite straightforward when breaking down the meanings of each aspect of the designation. Below is a full breakdown of what each part of a service cord’s designation means:
Deciphering the Service Cord Code:
S |
“S” as in service, this designates that the product is a type of service cord. |
J |
“J” as in junior, while other service cords have a voltage rating of 600V, any product with “J” in the name are junior service cords and have a 300V rating. |
V |
“V” as in vacuum cord, this also means that the product is rated at 300 volts, however this specific rating is typically used for vacuum cleaners and other portable cleaning equipment. |
T |
“T” as in thermoplastic, this letter is regarding the material that the service cord’s jacket is made of. |
E |
“E” as in elastomer, similar to the previous entry, “E” also regards the material of the service cord’s jacket. |
O |
“O” as in oil-resistant jacket, meaning that the product has been rated as resistant to certain chemicals, and as such can handle certain environments where it would be exposed to such elements for a period of time |
OO |
“OO” / “Double O”, as in oil-resistant insulation and oil-resistant jacket. This rating means that both the outer jacket and internal insulation are rated to withstand certain chemical interactions for a period of time. |
W |
“W” as in weather and water resistant. As the name implies, the “W” rating means that this product is suitable to be used inside as well as outside. It is resistant to conditions such as sunlight, moisture, etc. |
WA |
“WA” stands for solely weather resistant and is less resilient to prolonged interactions with water than “W”. This product is still rated for use both indoors and outdoors. |

With an understanding of what each letter means in the designation of service cords, the next question would be how they compare to one another:
